Back in 2014, the Supreme Court had put a ban on the sport of jallikattu in Tamil Nadu, as it felt that the sport was amounting to cruelty on animals. South Indian superstar Kamal Hassan, who is in the favour on lifting the ban from this traditional age-old sport that takes place during the festive season of Pongal, has a point to make.
In an interview at Indian Today South Conclave Chennai, the actor said that jallikattu is a “traditional culture” of the state. He said, “If you want a ban on jallikattu, let’s also ban biryani… I’m a big fan of jallikattu,” adding that he himself is a big fan of the sport and has played it several times.
This is not the first time Hassan is speaking about it. The actor had spoken against the Supreme Court’s decision, as it banned the sport that surmounted to cruelty against animals.
Hassan also went on to compare the sport with the Spanish bull-fighting where the bull is tortured and bled to death in the sport. Stating that bulls are treated as gods in Tamil Nadu Hassan further added, “It is about taming the bull and not causing them physical harm by breaking its horns or other parts”.
